Over the next few blogs I will attempt to humbly discuss Humility. I was in a training last week for CISM (Crisis Intervention Stress Management), sounds like a ton of fun right? The instructor used a phrase that struck me to my core. He said, ” Get the ‘GET’ out.” The “GET” is Greed, Ego and Turf. I think truth be told, we all have a little too much ‘GET’ in our ‘go’. So let me begin today by painting a tapestry for humility.
JAMES 4:6-7,10 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Be Humble
Humble is the opposite of proud. Pride is the attitude of a self-sufficient person. Humility is the attitude of a person who knows they need help. A humble person will pray a lot and follow God’s instructions, instead of leaning to their own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5,6)
1 CORINTHIANS 4:7 For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
Humility does not make you think you are better than anyone else.
1 CORINTHIANS 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
Whatever you are that is good is also by the grace of God — not by your virtue. You did not create yourself.
2 CORINTHIANS 3:5 Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.
You are not all that! Louie Giglio said it well in the title of his book: I am NOT; But I know I AM.
